International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, also called the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, commemorating the day Auschwitz was liberated.

In 2005, the United Nations designated this day as an international commemoration to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, the millions of other victims of Nazism, and to encourage educational efforts that prevent future genocides. In response to this call, North Carolina enacted the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act (NC Gen. Stat. 115C-81.57), requiring Holocaust education in public schools. The law went into full effect in Fall 2023, making North Carolina one of 27 states that mandate Holocaust instruction.

Each year, CJHPS holds a memorial service on January 27 to remember the victims and survivors of Auschwitz and the Holocaust. Please consider joining us, details of the service can be found on our events calendar prior to the event.
